The Padres (FO & Co.) have discussed many trading possibilities with Theo Epstein and his former assistant, our rookie GM Jed "the Jedi" Hoyer, according to Peter Abraham and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. "The Globe duo believes Boston could have interest in a reliever like Joe Thatcher, and, given the team's excess of outfielders when Jacoby Ellsbury returns, they may match up with San Diego." From the beginning the Padres have talked about getting a bat, (to protect Adrian or improve the lead off position) a pitcher, (to help the youngsters with their work load) and a controllable young position player. I would love for the Padres brass to trade for Ryan Kalish now while the Sox could use some bullpen help and get a young "controllable" outfielder for the future. Especially since Blanks, Venable Gwynn, Durango and Cunningham all have question marks. Who better to trade with than someone you are as familiar with as Jed Hoyer is of Boston's prospects. Having said that it would assure the Padres would also have to part with a pretty decent piece as well for it to work. Kalish is close, spending time between AA-AAA with a impressive line: .294 .382 .502 .884 with 13 HR 18 doubles in 343 and 47 RBI. He is probably more suited to be in a corner outfield spot and is a similar player to Cunninham but really has came on strong in 2010. The Baseball Cube:
Scouting Report: Ryan is an Excellent athlete with a solid build, very good bat speed with quick hands. Another hard nosed ballplayer that is all out all the time. The organization has worked with Kalish on his patience at the plate; and over time he has come to demonstrate a much better approach and improved on his plate discipline. Not a prototypical power guy however, he does have decent power that could be utilized well while under Jed Hoyer and Co's philosophy of "playing Petco Park into an advantage". Had previously been coined as a Groundball hitter however, this year has been spraying the ball with more authority, Hitting to all fields. Does not have "burner" type speed, but is fast enough to steal regularly on the MLB level due to great acceleration and exceptional base running instincts. In the field, he has outstanding range, a solid arm, and fringe level accuracy. It may or may not be the time to trade with Boston being so close to the deadline, but you have to think the two GM's will make a deal in the near future. Whether that is for Adrian Gonzalez or a high ceiling pitcher or outfielder . Other possibilities that could be more likely, Bill Hall, Jeremy Hermida, and Darnell McDonald. Personally I would hope the Padres feel stronger about our internal options than players like Hall, Hermida and McDonald.
