Jesus Antonio Guzman

Bats: Right, Throws: Right Height: 6' 1", Weight: 215 lb.
Born: June 14, 1984 in Cumana, Sucre, VE

The Padres signed third base, first base/left fielder Jesus Guzman to a minor league deal according to MLBtraderumors.com. Guzman, 26, is an intriguing player who hit .321/.376/.510 with 18 homers in 445 at-bats for Triple-A Fresno in the Giants organization in 2010.

Guzman has consistently produced impressive offensive numbers the last couple years across the board. Now 26, will be vying for a bench spot with the Padres and possibly even security for if, (when) Adrian Gonzalez is dealt. Guzman has played left field, (59 games) right field, (7 games) third base (458 games), short stop, (8 games) second (106 games) and first base (116) games. His total numbers of games played at each position through the minors.

Defensively, Guzman is still a work in progress. Last year he was primarily playing third base, left field with a handful of games at first base. However, the year before he was primarily at first. He Is a very solid hitter, with both convincing power and the ability to make consistent contact while showing much improved plate discipline the last few years. Guzman doesn't have a position of his own because of his below average defense. Having said that, if Guzman can continue annihilating minor league pitching he will more than likely find his way on the Padres bench as a cheap option to provide insurance at 3rd, 1st and the corner outfield spots.
